Great British Bake Off for the Whole Family

For many families, time spent together in the kitchen can be the best time to strengthen bonds and spend a solid amount of quality time together. With the Great British Bake Off back on BBC1 tonight, it’s a great time to encourage your children to get hands-on in the kitchen and create some delicious treats.

Cooking and baking not only allows children to discover new flavours and foods, but it can boost their maths, language skills and even their emotional development.

Mixing in Maths

Letting your kids count out the eggs and measure the grams of flour will help them learn about measuring and about number concepts in real life.

Recipe for Linguistic Success

There are many benefits from using recipes with your children. They can practice reading, or listening to verbal instructions, both of which will help them learn about sequencing – essential for good communication skills.
Following instructions is an important school skill, and baking can give your child lots of practice in this.
It’s also a good opportunity to talk with your children about how things smell, taste, feel, sound and look.

The Emotional Bond

Preparing and cooking food requires patience and care. You can show your child that making food for family and friends is a way of giving and receiving love. Friends and family appreciate the time and effort spent, and they also give lots of praise for the chef!
The time spent together baking as a family is beneficial to everyone involved and its is a crucial part of creating the memories, traditions, and sense of belonging that creates the kinds of family relationships that last a lifetime.

Here are some recipes for you to try with your children today!
