Have a spare room? Fostering is an opportunity for you

Have a spare room? Fostering is an opportunity for you

Recently we did something we haven’t done before:

We posted a job advert for foster carers on an online job website.

It came about after a conversation with a foster carer. We were discussing some training she did to help gain her next level of foster carer qualification. And she said it was so interesting how she was using skills from her previous job (she was a nurse) in fostering.

Most foster carers have done something else before fostering – we’ve had teachers, veterans, emergency services personnel, office workers, shop assistants, carers, nursery workers, builders, plumbers and the list goes on and on.

Fostering is another type of career – rather, it’s a vocation for people who feel called to help vulnerable children and make a difference

Based on our foster carers’ experiences, you often recognise this vocation when you’re at a crossroads with your job.

So this brings us back to the job advert we put out.

Where better to find people at a career crossroads than on a job site?

And we’ve had lots of interest from people who had never properly considered fostering before, because they hadn’t thought of it in terms of a career opportunity that would let them do something they loved.

There’s lots of opportunity with fostering because there are so many children in need of your care and support

You don’t need formal qualifications to foster, but you do need to be:

  • Motivated to help children be the best that they can be
  • Patient, understanding, resilient and have a good sense of humour!
  • Over 21 years of age (no upper age restriction)
  • In good health

And you need to have a spare room.

Does this sound like you?

Let’s have a quick chat to discuss what’s involved in fostering.

There’s no obligation or pressure – it’s a way for you to speak to a social worker about everything from placement types to support to payment, so you can decide if it’s right for you.

Call us on 0845 074 0076 or send us a message and we’ll respond quickly.

5 minutes of your time could change the future of a child in need

PS – Not ready for a chat? Browse our blog for a wealth of information and read our Guide to What Foster Carers Get Paid.

PPS – In the coming weeks we’ll be focusing on some of the skills involved in being a foster carer. Check back for the first blog post.
