Being open and honest is important in my fostering role
Joanne Sharples is the registered manager at Perpetual Fostering. In this blog she explains her responsibilities and what matters to her most in her role.
In my role there is the requirement for me to fulfil several responsibilities, such as ensuring we meet good practice guidelines or fostering regulations. Every day sees a different challenge, but it also brings its own reward.
On a daily basis I meet and thoroughly enjoy spending times with the individuals which make up our fostering community. I will talk with foster carers, staff members, children and young people, social workers, commissioners, health or education professionals or members of our fostering panel. The list seems endless but these conversations are vital as these interactions help us to shape our service and ensure we meet the children and young people’s varying needs.
It is important for me to oversee all aspects of our service and provide leadership in relation to the recruitment of foster carers, the assessment processes and the supervision provided to our foster carers. To do this I have to make myself available to people and be seen as approachable. Most important of all I believe it is crucial that I am open and honest with everyone I talk to.
This is an imperative if I am to offer support to the staff and foster carers who ensure a high quality service is in place that promotes positive outcomes for looked after children. After all, without our foster carers and our staff we couldn’t provide the placements which local authorities are desperately looking to make.
As the registered manager, I also manage quality and safeguarding performance within the agency. In brief, this ensures we are doing everything possible to make sure we create the best fostering experiences and opportunities for children and young people in our care.
