Top tips on staying healthy and active
Perpetual Fostering’s youth ambassador Emily offers advice to help other young people stay healthy and active
It is very important to have a healthy and active lifestyle, especially when you’re a young person. So I’ve highlighted four key ways to look after your well being!
Make sure you have your five a day
Fruit and vegetables keep your body happy and healthy, so it’s important that you have at least five portions of fruit and veg a day. There are so many reasons why having your five a day is beneficial to you. Fruit and vegetables are a good source of vitamins and minerals, they’re an excellent source of dietary fibre (which helps maintain a healthy gut) and of course, fruit and vegetables taste great and there’s so much variety to choose from!
Dance, rock climbing, swimming, walking the dog – all of these examples show that exercise doesn’t have to be boring and is super easy to do. Young people aged 5-18 should do at least 60 minutes (1 hour) of physical activity a day to maintain a basic level of health. This 60 minute minimum can be filled with lots of fun activities that keep you active and aren’t dull and dreary.
Take care of your teeth
It’s true that if you take care of your teeth, they’ll take care of you! Your teeth help you eat the food that keeps you healthy and keeping them clean prevents cavities and unhealthy gums. Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day, spend at least two to three minutes at a time brushing your teeth and make sure you floss your teeth to get rid of hidden bacteria.
Get enough sleep
Getting enough sleep is more important than you might think. You need to make sure you get enough sleep so that you’re prepared for all the daily activities ahead of you such as going to school, having fun with your friends and doing your homework.
